Travel With Children Tips

When planning a family trip that includes air travel, most parents peruse the Internet and parenting guides for information on how to travel stress-free. While most of the advice is fairly straightforward and helpful, some of these tips need to be carefully evaluated by parents to prevent unnecessary problems.

When to Fly with Children

Taking flights during a child’s naptime and around bedtime is suggested in What to Expect the Toddler Years (Eisenberg, Murkoff and Hathaway, 1994). The logic is that at these times, children will sleep making the flight easier for everyone. However, it is unlikely that any child will sleep easily on a plane - most adults can't do it. There are too many distractions and there is nothing worse than trying to make a baby sleep when there are so many other things to do.

When children won't sleep on a bedtime flight, neither will their parents, nor any of the other passengers, in some cases. It is best to fly in the morning or following afternoon naps. Children are at their best at these times, and if they miss a nap, parents are more easily able to deal with a tired child during the day, rather than during the night, when everyone is sleep deprived.
