On this day in history, April 28:

President Lyndon Johnson sent more than 22,000 U.S. troops to restore order in the Dominican Republic and prevent what he called a Communist dictatorship from seizing power in the Caribbean island nation.

Trouble arose in 1961, when Rafael Trujillo -- a brutal, corrupt dictator whose staunch anti-Communism helped him retain the support of the United States in the Cold War -- was assassinated. This led to the rise of the leftist, reformist government of Juan Bosch, who was elected president in 1962.

The Dominican military detested Bosch and his liberalism, and he was overthrown in 1963. Two years later, groups demanding that he be reinstated launched attacks against the military regime. Fear spread in the United States of another Cuba, with some U.S. government officials suspecting that Cuban leader Fidel Castro was behind the violence.
