Nowadays, the Declaration of Independence has its own shrine, protected by "ballistically tested glass and plastic laminate," watched over by cameras and a computerized monitoring system, and put to sleep at night in an underground vault. It's safe to say that the National Archives makes every effort to preserve the document that told the world that the thirteen British colonies hugging the Atlantic coast renounced their connection to Great Britain.

But for many years, the Declaration didn't have it so good. Committed to parchment by the Continental Congress in Philadelphia in late July 1776, the document did not get much loving care at first. Even the Founding Fathers did not seem to treat it with particular awe.
First of all, the parchment on which the document is written is perfectly ordinary. Whoever bought it for the Continental Congress wasn't very fussy. Indeed this particular sheet may have been improperly prepared.
