Cox Kings Tours And Travels

For the traveler drawn to the legendary life of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, there is no better place to begin his or her tour than along the wild coastal region of Cornwall, England. Here, in the 6th century, the wizard Merlin enchanted Uther Pendragon, urging him into an affair with Lady Igrain. Arthur was the progeny of that tryst.

Tintagel, Cornwall

The 13th century ruin of Tintagel Castle sits on Cornwall's craggy windswept coast. Tintagel is said to be built on the spot where King Arthur was born. History records there has been a fort or stronghold here since the days of the conquering Romans, and in the 12th century, Geoffrey of Monmouth imagined a castle here in his written history of the Cornish Kings.

One hundred years after Monmounth's writings, the earl of Cornwall built the castle which is the ruin the traveler sees today. Even in the 13th century architecture was sympathetic to earlier traditions. The design was deliberately "old world." The builders wanted it to look like it may have looked in Arthur's time.
