The question for many, once the decision has been made to travel around the globe, is whether to go alone, or to bring a friend. Both are equally promising options. When I embarked on my gap year I decided to go alone. The main reason was that none of my friends wanted to go travelling at that time. If they had felt differently I’m sure I would have brought them along. However the decision to go alone was a great one. Arguments and indecision are dispelled and it offers a prime opportunity to meet new people. You literally have to make an effort, otherwise you’ll be miserable.

Alone but with structure

I started my travels by getting a job in Australia so immediately met some like-minded people and formed a new friendship group. Later on I joined a coach tour group in Australia and then in Ecuador, I took part in a volunteer work program where I again met like-minded people, with whom I continued to travel after the volunteer work.

Basically, I took the approach of going alone and joining groups. For me it had a bit of structure. There was a risk that everyone in the group would be cretins but that was unlikely, and thankfully that wasn’t the case. Fundamentally I was never lonely. I knew in advance, before each new adventure that I would be surrounded by people and I would have the opportunity to make new friends.
